Avatar sinks Titanic

Sci-fi epic Avatar has become the highest grossing film ever. The James Cameron film surpassed 1997's Titanic to take the honour of the highest grossing film in the world. According to 20th Century Fox, Avatar's worldwide takings since it was released six weeks ago amount to $1.859 billion (£1.15 billion). In contrast, Titanic's box office takings totalled $1.843 billon. However, the figures do not factor in inflation or the higher cost of tickets for Avatar's 3D screenings. The BBC reported that when inflation is taken into account the biggest grossing movie of all time in North America is Gone With The Wind. Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar was reportedly the most expensive film ever made, with a budget of at least $300m. Titanic, which stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, was also directed by James Cameron. It won 11 Oscars including the award for best picture. Celebrate in style with our latest champagne deals.
