Catherine Horwood: My mother inspired my love of gardening
19/05/2010
Well-known writer Catherine Horwood has admitted her mother is partly responsible for her love of gardening. Writing in the Daily Mail, the author, who has just released a book called Gardening Women: Their Stories from 1600 to the Present, said gardening was a passion both she and her mother shared. "Every phone call began with us comparing notes on our plants; weekends were happily spent together visiting nurseries or other people's gardens," she said. During her mother's illness and subsequent death from Alzheimer's, gardening helped her cope, she added. "Far from being a painful place to be because of memories of our happier times, my garden became somewhere I could stay in touch with the person [my mother] used to be," she added. Earlier this year, Nicola Carruthers, the chief executive of gardening-as-therapy charity Thrive, told the Times that gardening can greatly help people who have severe depression or Alzheimer's disease.
