Critics review X-Factor contestant's West End debut
23/10/2009
Diana Vickers, who finished fourth in last year's X-Factor, has been scrutinised by theatre critics as she debuts in London's West End.Playing the lead role in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Diana is filling the shoes of Jane Horrocks, who starred in both the original theatre and movie versions. The play, about a painfully shy Lancashire girl with who has the uncanny ability for mimicking famous songstresses, first opened at the National Theatre in 1992. Today's version has met less favourable reviews than its predecessor, with Stage Magazine saying that the storyline hasn't the same relevance in the current era of TV talent shows. "The piece looks more like a speciality act wrapped up in a vaudeville narrative," it said. Vickers' performance is described as good by the Guardian, while Henry Hitchings from the Evening Standard said "when she sings she soars". Diana lost out to JLS, Alexandra Burke and Eoghan Quigg in the X-Factor semi-final in 2008. Celebrate in style with our latest champagne deals. ![]() |
