Helen Mirren 'sick of Hollywood typecasting Brits'

22/04/2010

Helen Mirren 'sick of Hollywood typecasting Brits'Hollywood needs to stop typecasting British actors as villains in films, award-winning actress Helen Mirren has said.

Speaking at an event in Los Angeles to celebrate British success in Hollywood, the actress said Brits are easy targets for Hollywood stereotypes.

"I think it's rather unfortunate that the villain in every movie is always British, we're such an easy target that they can comfortably make the Brits the villains," she said.

"It's just nice to say we're not snooty, stuck up, malevolent, malignant creatures as we're so often portrayed," she noted, adding that there was more to British people than the Royal Family.

Among the British actors who have recently played baddies are Sir Ian McKellen, who took on the role of the villainous Magneto in the X-Men films, while Alfred Molina starred as Dr Otto Octavius in Spider-Man 2.

Mirren, who won the best actress Oscar for her role in 2006's The Queen, will next be seen as a female Prospero in a film adaptation of The Tempest.
