BBC's Radio 4 is attracting its highest audience in ten years as listeners tune into shows including the Today programme, Woman's Hour, The Archers and You and Yours.
One in six listeners (10.2 million) are now choosing the station, the highest since the current system of audience measurement began ten years ago.
The increased listenership has been attributed to an increased demand for serious news during the recession, as well as a move from older people away from 'youth obsessed' television.
Andrew Harrop, head of public policy at Age Concern and Help the Aged, said: "TV has become out of touch with the tastes of an ageing audience, reflecting our societys obsession with youth."
The station, which replaced BBC Home Service in 1967, has an average audience age of 55 years old.
Meanwhile, Radio 2's Terry Wogan kept his title as the nation's most popular breakfast presenter.
