Terry Wogan to leave Radio 2 breakfast showVeteran broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan has announced he is to step down as presenter of BBC Radio 2's breakfast show at the end of the year.

The 71-year-old will be replaced by Radio 2's current drivetime host Chris Evans, who he referred to as a "good friend" as he made the announcement.

"This is not goodbye - not even au revoir," he told listeners as he revealed details of a new live show he plans to host in the New Year, reports the BBC.

Radio 2 controller Bob Shennan paid tribute to Wogan, saying: "His unique talent has provided millions of listeners with the soundtrack to their morning."

Simon Mayo, who currently hosts an afternoon shown on the BBC's 5 Live is widely expected to fill Evans' shoes in the drivetime slot.

Wogan was recently reported to have called newsreading the "easiest job in the media", comments which are expected to appear in his forthcoming book Where Was I?! The World According To Terry Wogan.
