Cyclists warned of bike theft risks
26/08/2009
Bikes are increasingly being targeted by thieves so people should be sure to keep them locked up, it has been claimed.Anyone being green and cycling to work should take care to leave their bike in a well-lit area locked up and then put it in a garage or shed once they are home, according to M&S Money Home Insurance. The company cited statistics from the British Crime Survey which shows that 540,000 bikes were stolen during 2008-09, an increase of 22 per cent since the last survey. Steve Price, head of general insurance at M&S, said: "Unfortunately bikes are a prime target for thieves and cyclists should take basic security steps to decrease the risk of becoming a victim." He advised checking that home insurance policies cover damage to or theft of bikes. Research conducted by home insurance provider More Than found that Liverpool is the safest place to leave a bike unattended, with an unattended cycle being left alone for two hours and 22 minutes in the city centre, compared to 17 minutes in London. ![]() |
