Home insurance claims drop
11/09/2009
The number of home insurance claims received in the first half of 2009 dropped to 373,000 from a staggering 527,000 during the same period last year, new data shows.Figures from Sainsbury's Home Insurance Claims Index show that the average size of claims also dropped, with people claiming on average £735 during the first six months of this year compared to £918 in 2008. However, the reasons for making claims were broadly similar across both periods, with water escaping, accidental damage, theft and accidental damage to TVs, video audio and computers all being common. One notable difference was that storm damage was the reason for a greater number of claims last year as a result of extreme bad weather. Despite this drop in claims, experts are reminding people that it is important not to reduce or stop taking out home contents and buildings cover. Ratedpeople.com, a match making service for home improvers and tradesmen, recently stated that simple home security measures can help lower people's home insurance premiums. Fitting double-glazed windows, installing a burglar alarm and increasing the number of lock on internal doors can all help make properties more secure. ![]() |
