Alzheimer's Society: Brain training games keep your mind active
23/04/2010
Playing brain training games helps to keep your mind active, the Alzheimer's Society has said. The charity was commenting after a study conducted by the Medical Research Council's Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit claimed that brain training games have no impact on mental performance. Over six weeks, 11,430 adults were followed for the study, with researchers finding no evidence which supported previous claims that brain training games can improve cognitive functions. But Gill Myers, Alzheimer Society support service manager for York, suggested that while the games may not necessarily increase brain power, they can help with alertness. Similarly, older games, such as crossword puzzles and quizzes or even Sudoku or can also help people feel more mentally alert. "Research shows that if you do new activities or different activities or a range of mental alert activities or if you have good social networks, it can keep your brain active," she added.
