Bedtime routine 'key to good sleep'

Bedtime routine 'key to good sleep'Establishing a routine before getting into your comfortable bed can help ensure you have a better night's sleep, according to one doctor.

Speaking to Kare11.com, Dr Gretchen Phillips said following the same routine before getting into bed can help people get to sleep, rather than tossing and turning in their beds.

However, she added that it is important that the routine, which should include no alcohol or caffeine after 17:00 BST, is followed every day, even at weekends.

"At a specific time each day, including weekends, start your routine and do the same process before bed, including getting undressed, brushing your teeth, etc," she advised.

Ensure you do some exercise every day and don't be tempted to turn on your TV, she added. In fact, she said there should be no TVs in the bedroom.

"It is best to not even read in bed. Your brain needs to associate being in bed with sleep, and doing other things confuse the issue," she concluded.

Last month, the Metro reported that Brits are now going to bed later than ever before.
