Botox 'may help relieve migraines'

11/09/2009

Botox 'may help relieve migraines'While most people who use Botox are hoping to smooth out their wrinkles, new research suggests that the treatment could also help ease migraine sufferers' headaches.

Two studies presented at the International Headache Congress in the US supported this theory, with the first showing that patients using Botox had 7.8 fewer days per month when they were affected by headaches, compared with 6.4 fewer headache days on placebo, reports Bloomberg.

The second showed that individuals having Botox injections had nine fewer days of headaches compared to 6.7 for those taking a placebo treatment.

Botox maker Allergan has submitted the findings to a medical journal and expects to give US regulators access to the data before the end of the month.

If the cosmetic injection is approved as a headache treatment, it could provide relief for the one in four women and one in 12 men in the UK who are affected by migraines.
