Brits struggling to sleep in beds
27/05/2010
In spite of their comfortable beds, many Brits are struggling to sleep at night, new research has revealed. The Great British Sleep Survey has found that a third of British adults suffer from insomnia, spending hours tossing and turning in their beds, the Scotsman reported. Professor Colin Espie, the clinical psychologist who carried out the study, warned that a good sleep should be recognised as a key factor in good health. "Sleep is a fundamental life process, just like eating and drinking, yet many people have poor sleep and suffer the consequences. Sleep is life's refuelling station. When we sleep well we generally feel well," the professor told the newspaper. Earlier this month, a study by the University of Warwick and Federico II University Medical School in Naples found that people who get fewer than six hours' sleep each night are putting themselves at risk of a premature death. Individuals who sleep for six hours or fewer every night are 12 per cent more likely to die early than those who sleep the recommended six to eight hours a night, said the scientists.
