CPAP therapy is 'gold standard treatment for sleep apnoea'

CPAP therapy is 'gold standard treatment for sleep apnoea'Using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy to treat sleep apnoea in overweight people could be an effective way of reducing some of the risk of cardiovascular disease, new research shows.

With a link between obesity and sleep apnoea, a study published in the journal Circulation suggests that, because obesity can be difficult to address, focusing solely on sleep apnoea could help limit the risks of conditions such as atherosclerosis, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Beccy Mullins, clinical nurse specialist at the Centre for Healthy Sleep, said: "If you or your partner are prone to heavy snoring in the night or feel tired it is important to seek referral at a sleep centre, you may be at risk of sleep apnoea.

"Once diagnosed, you may be provided with CPAP therapy, recommended by NICE as the gold standard treatment for sleep apnoea."

Last month, a report by the Vitality Show and sleep experts MetroNaps revealed that over the last five years, the number of people getting the recommended eight hours of sleep a night has fallen from 26 per cent to 19 per cent.
