Catching up on sleep at weekends is 'only a quick fix'
19/01/2010
While catching up on lost sleep at the weekend might provide a quick fix, it will not stop the effects of chronic sleep loss, a new US-based study shows. According to the research, which was carried out by the Harvard teaching hospital, chronic sleep loss over a few weeks can result in much slower reaction times and may even cause poorer performance in daily life. Commenting on the study, Jessica Alexander, media officer at the Sleep Council, said people should always try to go to bed and get up at the same time to ensure they have a quality sleep. "People are still not investing as much attention as they should in the basics of getting a good night's sleep. Irregular hours are just one factor," she added. "Uncomfortable beds; not enough fresh air and exercise, a poor diet, too much caffeine, smoking, no wind down routine, bedrooms which are too stuffy and an addiction to modern day 24 hour gadgetry all contribute to poor quality sleep," she noted.
