Employees 'losing sleep over jobs'

24/06/2010

Employees 'losing sleep over jobs'Three out of every four staff members are losing sleep worrying about their job.

According to a Travelodge survey of more than 6,000 people, three-quarters of workers are getting less than the recommended eight hours sleep a night, with many worrying about job security, performance at work and finances.

Civil servants, bankers and factory workers were most likely to be affected, the survey revealed, with those who work in the civil service getting an average of just five hours and 53 minutes sleep each night.

Leigh McCarron, sleep director at Travelodge, said: "It is no surprise that those industries facing spending cuts and potential job losses came top. Job security and money worries are key drivers of stress."

Travelodge is launching "sleep concerts" next month, with musicians playing specially-commissioned tunes aimed at helping guests feel sleepy.

Earlier this month, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, the author of Tired but Wired, told the Independent that quality rather than quantity is more important when it comes to a good sleep.
