Excess lighting disrupting sleep, study revealsDespite having comfortable beds, many people are struggling to get to sleep because of excess lighting outside their homes, a new study has revealed.

According to research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CRPE), eight out of ten people surveyed claimed their view of the night sky is obstructed by light pollution.

Of these, 50 per cent claimed that excess lighting was disrupting their sleep, leading the CPRE to call for efforts to be made to address the issue of light pollution.

Respondents claimed that road lights (89 per cent) were most responsible for light pollution, followed by security lights (79 per cent).

Sports grounds (53 per cent) and supermarkets (41 per cent) were listed as the next major offenders.

Earlier this year, research by the Vitality Show and sleep experts MetroNaps found that the number of people getting the recommended eight hours of sleep a night has fallen from 26 per cent to 19 per cent over the last five years.
