Expert calls for sun bed crackdown
17/11/2009
Young people should be banned from using sun beds, according to a leading dermatologist, Dr Samantha Beswick. Her statement follows calls last week by the health minister Gillian Merron to ban children under the age of 18 from using sun beds. Ms Merron said that voluntary action by the sun bed industry to stop children had failed, adding that ministers planned to introduce legislation to tackle the problem. Dr Beswick is campaigning with the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) for more regulation on sun bed usage, reports the Burton Mail. She told the newspaper: "There is a known link between childhood sun exposure and melanoma and therefore this Government proposal is welcome." Research reported in the British Medical Journal recently showed that more than 250,000 children aged 11-17 in England are thought to use sun beds. Melanoma, a cancer of the skin, is one of the ten most common variants of the disease in Britain, according to Cancer Research UK. Looking for a free bed?
