Framework for regulation needed in cosmetic surgery industry

17/11/2009

Framework for regulation needed in cosmetic surgery industryA lack of regulation in the cosmetic surgery industry is putting patients at risk, according to a leading physician.

Writing in Clinical Risk, a publication from the Royal Society of Medicine, Dr Michael Mercer states that more stringent control is needed to clamp down on patients lives being put in jeopardy.

Dr Mercer, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (EASAPS), called the industry an 'unregulated mess' and said a regulatory framework was needed.

Paul Collins, editor of BuyAssociation agreed: "There is an opportunity for proper regulation to come into the industry in terms of practitioners, and people who are accredited. Also, things like marketing and procedures have to be addressed to make sure they are not unrealistic or misleading."

Dr Mercer added that unproven new products, such as barbed thread facelifts, pose a high risk – due in part to the lack of strict testing in the UK industry.

According to a press release from BAAPS, 34,187 surgical procedures were carried out by its members in 2008, more than a five per cent increase from 2007, when 32,453 were performed.
