Heart problems? Don't write off foreign holidays

23/07/2010

Heart problems? Don't write off foreign holidaysPeople who have had heart issues in the past can sometimes put off booking a foreign holiday because of fears that their condition means they can't fly safely.

But, according to new guidelines outlined in the Fitness to Fly report, which was published by the British Cardiovascular Society, there are few heart conditions that mean that patients can't fly safely.

It advised passengers to inform their airline of any pre-existing heart conditions that they may have and take other precautions when preparing to fly.

Emma Holyer, a spokesperson for LV= Insurance, added that people shouldn't "write off foreign holidays" just because that have had heart problems in the past.

"There's a little bit of a misconception amongst consumers that if you have had any kind of medical problems you are going to struggle. That isn't really the case," Ms Hoyler noted.

She suggested that whether someone can get insurance cover depends on individual circumstances and advised approaching insurers to find out if they'll cover you.
