Insufficient sleep 'linked to premature death'

05/05/2010

Insufficient sleep 'linked to premature death'People who get fewer than six hours' sleep each night are putting themselves at risk of a premature death, according to new research.

The study, which was carried out by the University of Warwick and Federico II University Medical School in Naples, says there is an "unequivocal evidence" of a link between a lack of sleep and an early death.

People who sleep for less than six hours every night are 12 per cent more likely to die early than those who sleep the recommended six to eight hours a night, said the scientists, who analysed 16 studies involving a total of 1.3 million people for the research.

Professor Francesco Cappuccio, leader of the Sleep, Health and Society Programme at the UK's University of Warwick, said many people are getting less sleep because of societal pressures, longer working hours and more shift-work.

"On the other hand, the deterioration of our health status is often accompanied by an extension of our sleeping time," he added.

Earlier this week, a study by Travelodge found that one in three Bits are lying awake worrying over who to vote for in the election.
