Laser eye surgery 'safer than corticosteroids'

21/09/2009

Laser eye surgery 'safer than corticosteroids'Laser eye surgery is the safer option for patients seeking treatment for branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).

Scientists compared the surgery to corticosteroid injections for the treatment of the disease, which can cause vision loss from the blockage of small veins in the back of the eye.

They found that not only was laser eye surgery as effective as the corticosteroid injections, it was also shown to carry fewer complications.

Dr Ingrid U Scott, professor at Penn State College of Medicine and co-chair of the study, said: "The lower rate of complications with laser treatment may indicate that it is the best proven treatment option for patients at this time.

She added: "Laser represents the benchmark against which other treatments should be compared in future clinical trials."

A reporter who recently underwent laser eye surgery said he was left with "perfect vision" after documenting his treatment for This is Local London.
