Light has 'effect on sleep quality'

19/04/2010

Light has 'effect on sleep quality'Light can have an effect on the quality of sleep people get, even if they have a comfortable bed, it has been claimed.

According to Jessica Alexander from the Sleep Council, light effects sleep quality and the depth of sleep.

She added that we are naturally programmed to be awake when it is bright outside and to sleep in the dark, though some people are more sensitive to light pollution than others.

People who were struggling to sleep because of street lights or other aspects of light pollutions should considering changing their curtains, Ms Alexander advised.

"The obvious answer to that is to get thicker curtains or use blackout blinds in combination with each other, even an eye mask. The solution is within their own hands really," she added.

Last week, the Campaign to Protect Rural England found that 50 per cent of people said excess lighting was disrupting their sleep.
