Low calorie diet 'vital' for tackling obesity
21/01/2010
People on very low calorie diets (VLCD) lose more weight than those who are on conventional diets, a year-long trial has found. The study was led by Professor Iain Broom, the director of the Centre for Obesity Research and Epidemiology at Robert Gordon University, who is also a professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Aberdeen. Professor Broom revealed that the study set out to find out how patients, "who were unsuccessful with the standard produce which is healthy eating minus 600 calories", could lose weight. He said: "There is no difference in the body composition change with a longer term use of VLCDs than with standard diets." "But you do get, because of the greater energy deficit, more weight loss in a shorter period of time," Professor Broom added. He noted that "energy deficit" for those on a VLCD "is going to be quite large, and consequently the weight loss will be somewhat faster. " According to the NHS Information Centre, more than one in five women in the UK are overweight, while a similar number of men (17 per cent) have a body mass index (BMI) of over 30. A BMI of between 20 and 25 is healthy, the British Nutrition Foundation said. See how you can transform your life with a free laser eye consultation Posted by Carla Spuri. ![]() |
