Migraine sufferers 'should wear' sunglasses in bed
12/01/2010
Wearing sunglasses in bed could help with migraines, scientists have claimed. A recent study of two groups of people who suffered regular severe headaches showed that light increased the effects of migraines. The groups were made up of blind people and also those with standard vision. When both groups were exposed to light, researchers found that the blind group did not report increased pain because the optic nerve did not send messages to the brain. This differed from the other group, which reported increased pain. According to researcher Professor Rami Burstein, of the Harvard Medical School, the dimmest of light can make migraine pain worse. "Extremely disabling, photophobia prevents patients from such routine activities as reading, writing, working or driving," he noted, adding that migraine patients should consider wearing sunglasses "even at night". About one in eight people in the UK suffer from migraine, according to Headache UK. Looking for a comfortable bed? Don't miss your chance and enter our prize draw now! Posted by Jez Walters. ![]() |
