Non-smokers 'less likely to develop a stroke'
15/04/2010
Non-smokers who also drink moderately have a lower risk of having a stroke, according to a new study. The research, which is published by the American Academy of Neurology, found that smoking has an impact on the link between alcohol intake and stroke risk. People who do not smoke, but drink moderate amounts of alcohol, were 37 per cent less likely to suffer from a stroke compared to non-drinkers, while in smokers this association was not observed. However, Elspeth McAusland at the Stroke Association, warned that excessive regularly drinking can increase the risk of stroke. There are two types of stroke, she noted, one caused by a blood clot to the brain and a stroke caused by a bleed to the brain. "Studies have shown that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol could decrease a person's risk of ischaemic stroke - a stroke caused by a blood clot - as alcohol may thin the blood and therefore could reduce the chance of a blood clot forming. "However, drinking a moderate amount of alcohol is not protective against haemorrhagic stroke - stroke caused by a bleed - and it could even increase a person's risk."
