Oily fish helps prevent cell ageing, new study shows
20/01/2010
Fish oil can help prevent cell ageing and speed up the healing process, two new research projects have found. According to a study, which was carried out by the University of California, fish oils slowed down the ageing process of heart cells in patients recovering from coronary heart disease. A further study, which gave intravenously administered fish oil to patients in intensive care at the Hospital Padre Americo in Portugal, found that patients had shorter stays in hospital as a result. Sara Stanner, a nutritionist from the British Nutrition Foundation, said that the studies provided evidence of the benefit of making dietary changes. "People who have already suffered from a heart attack are recommended to consume more oily fish or take supplements," she noted. "However, sources also include flaxseed and flax oil (linseed oil), soybean oil, rapeseed oil, walnuts, and green leafy vegetables. You can also buy omega 3 supplements made from algae," Ms Stanner added. See how much you can transform your life with a free laser eye surgery consultation. Posted by Jez Walters. ![]() |
