Older adults need less time in bed, says study
03/02/2010
Young adults are more tired during the day than healthy older people who do not have sleep disorders, research has revealed. The study, which was published in the journal Sleep, also noted that insomnia in over 60s could he helped by restricting sleep. Jessica Alexander, from The Sleep Council, said many older people complain of insomnia because they still try to get as much sleep as when they were younger and had a busier life. "They may find they don't get that much sleep anymore and therefore complain of sleep problems, which sleep restriction might help," she noted. She added that sleep in older adults is usually affected by a change in lifestyle and health issues. "When you get older, you can potentially develop more health issues that can affect your sleep and for many people in post-retirement, their lifestyle habits change," she said. Last year, research from the University of Warwick revealed that women who get less than eight hours of sleep each night have an increased risk of heart disease when compared to a men who sleep a similar amount.
