People 'cancelling gym membership and heading outdoors'
01/07/2010
A growing number of people are opting to cancel their gym memberships and instead are heading outside to exercise, according to a leading fitness expert.Steve Halsall, Mirror.co.uk lifestyle guru and fitness entrepreneur, said that because of the recession more people are donning their running shoes and exercising outdoors. "The trends are suggesting that cycling, running, walking and triathlons even are massive growth areas so people are dropping their gym memberships and going outside more and using outside facilities, which is a good thing," he said. Exercising outdoors could be a great way for pre-menopausal women to lose weight, according to a new study. Research by Anne C. Lusk, Ph.D., of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, US, and colleagues, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that women who took up cycling were less likely to have gained weight throughout the study period, even when riding for just five minutes a day.
