Pomegranates reduce cancer risk, says study

07/01/2010

Pomegranates reduce cancer risk, says studyEating pomegranates could help reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to a new study.

The research, which was published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, found that an ingredient in the fruit could help play a vital role in slowing the growth of some types of breast cancer.

Dr Caitlin Palframan, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said that because people tend to eat a variety of foods, "separating out the individual effects of one part of our diet on breast cancer risk is difficult to do".

"So, although this study is interesting, long-term research will be needed in humans to understand whether pomegranate juice could help reduce breast cancer risk," she noted.

Ms Palframan added that people can reduce their risk of breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption and exercising regularly.

One in nine women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to statistics from Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
