Research is key to cosmetic surgery abroad
18/09/2009
Brits considering travelling outside the UK to go under the surgeon's knife should research doctors and clinics thoroughly to avoid falling victim to complications, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).BAAPS said an increasing number of Brits are falling foul of botched 'holiday' surgery in destinations such as Malaysia, Australia and Spain. However, Katharine Griffiths, editor of CosmeticSurgeryToday.co.uk, said that there is no reason why patients should not still consider getting surgery abroad, providing they do their research. "There are some fantastic surgeons, doctors and medical centres abroad, just as there are in the UK, but it is important to apply exactly the same criteria to choosing a surgeon or clinic just as you would do here," she added. According to BAAPS figures, 34,187 surgical procedures were carried out by its members in 2008, over five per cent more than 2007, when 32,453 were performed.
