Researchers: Testosterone affects quality of sleep
17/05/2010
Despite comfortable beds and feather duvets, middle-aged men do not feel as rested in the morning compared to younger males, a new study has revealed. The research, which was carried out in Canada, found that a reduction in the sex hormone testosterone affects the quality of sleep in middle-aged men. Zoran Sekerovic, a graduate student from the University of Montreal's Department of Psychology, said there is a reduction in deep sleep as men get older. In young men, deep sleep represents ten to 20 per cent of total sleep, dropping to five to seven per cent by the age of 50. Mr Sekerovic said: "Deep sleep is when the recuperation of body and mind is optimal." "The loss of deep sleep is a serious problem that could be treated with testosterone. That would be tremendous progress," he added. Earlier this month, a study by the University of Warwick and Federico II University Medical School in Naples found that people who get fewer than six hours' sleep each night are putting themselves at risk of a premature death.
