Simple bowel cancer test 'could save lives'
30/04/2010
A simple five-minute screening test could help reduce a person's risk of developing of bowel cancer, a major study has found. The research, which was carried out by Imperial College London, looked at men and women aged between 55 and 64, who underwent an examination of the lower colon and rectum. The results showed a 43 per cent cut in the death rate for bowel cancer. Hilary Whittaker, chief executive of the charity Beating Bowel Cancer, said the test should be "incorporated into the national screening programme as quickly as possible". She added: "It would be an extremely big step forward and a very welcome step forward, because this is a proper diagnostic, preventative screening programme." Awareness of bowel cancer is poor, despite it being the second biggest cancer killer, she noted. "People are literally dying from embarrassment. We need to get over to the general public and health professionals these high risk symptoms and the importance of early detection." Bowel cancer causes over 16,000 deaths in the UK each year.
