Sleep 'helps memory'
02/07/2010
Getting a good night's sleep can improve people's memory and help them make links between loosely related facts, new research shows. As part of the study, which can be found in the journal Psychological Science, 24 university students had to do different word game tests on a computer. Some students did the tests one evening before going to sleep, while others were allowed to rest for the night beforehand. The researchers found that those who slept before taking the assessment performed very strongly in the prospective memory test. Professor Dr Mark McDaniel, a psychologist at Washington University in St Louis in the US, said: "We found that sleep benefits prospective memory by strengthening the weak associations in the brain, and that hasn't been shown before." Last month, Travelodge found that 75 per cent of Britain's workforce is getting less than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night, with many getting stressed over job security and money worries.
