Sleeping longer in bed could help you stay slim, says doctorSpending some extra time in bed could help you stay slim, according to Dr Shahrad Taheri.

The doctor, who is a consultant endocrinologist at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, noted that sleep deprivation could cause people to be overweight or obese.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dr Taheri said a recent study which he carried out showed that people who sleep for significantly less than seven hours a night often end up being obese.
He noted: "Lack of sleep seems to stimulate the hormones that regulate appetite.

"It leads to higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone that triggers appetite and lower levels of leptin, that tells your body it's full."

People who sleep fewer than four hours each evening are 73 per cent more likely to gain weight, he added.

Last month, the Daily Mail reported that women need more time in bed than bed.

Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University and author of Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep, told the newspaper that women need more sleep because of their multi-tasking brain.
