Speak to your doctor before going travelling, says expert

Speak to your doctor before going travelling, says expertIf you have bagged yourself a cheap flight or a cruise deal, it's important to speak to your doctor before you go, one expert has said.

TV doctor Pixie McKenna was commenting after the 8 Weeks To Go campaign set out to debunk commonly held travel myths. These include suggestions that gin and tonic is a good way to prevent malaria and that friendly dogs don't carry rabies.

Dr McKenna said: "People are misinformed about many things and if you hear something from a friend or a colleague you are probably going to think that it is the correct information instead of trying to verify it yourself with a healthcare professional.

"Unfortunately, a lot of people believe their colleagues and friends and don't take advice from a healthcare professional, which I guess is the whole point of our campaign."

She said people should always speak to their doctor before heading on holiday, adding that sixty per cent of travellers will get traveller's diarrhoea and one in two people will experience illness or injury when they travel at some point in their lives.
