Stress 'can lead to sleeping problems'
30/06/2010
Even with the most comfortable bed in the world, stress can stop people sleeping, one expert has said.According to Jessica Alexander, spokesperson for the Sleep Council, stress is one of the mind's "great sleep inhibitors". "It stops the brain getting out of 'awake' mode and into 'sleep' mode. We need to relax and wind down and allow sleep to find us. If there is stress and worry in our heads, then that won't happen." Her comments came as research by Travelodge found that 75 per cent of Britain's workforce is getting less than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night, with many getting stressed over job security and money worries. Ms Alexander added that companies should also play a greater role in helping to ensure their employees are sleeping okay by running sleep training sessions. "Larger companies probably have more room to do this," she said. "You do see ideas like Indian head massages being used by some companies, but this is not so common." ![]() |
