Tai Chi 'beneficial for arthritis suffers'

Tai Chi 'beneficial for arthritis suffers'People with arthritis should consider taking up Tai Chi, according to new research.

The study, which was published in the Arthritis Care and Research Journal, showed that the martial art helped sooth pain in those suffering from arthritis of the knee, a painful condition which afflicts tens of thousands of Britons.

Lynn Love, director of operations at the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS), agreed with the findings of the study, which was carried out by researchers at Tufts University in Massachusetts, adding that being active is important for general wellbeing.

"Gentle exercises are certainly beneficial for many people with rheumatoid arthritis, but that is down to the individual because the disease could be so different in every individual," she said.

She also added that smokers should quit because the disease is more aggressive in those who smoke.

According to Arthritis Care, there are 200 types of arthritis which are classified into three categories: inflammatory arthritis, non-inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue disease.
