Vegetarian food and drink key to long life?

10/12/2009

Vegetarian food and drink key to long life?A diet of vegetarian food and drink with the correct balance of proteins could be key to a long life, according to research from the Institute of Healthy Ageing at University College London.

The study found that the aging process could be slowed by limiting the consumption of methionine, an amino acid found in fish, meat and nuts, resulting in a longer lifespan.

Commenting on the research, a spokesperson from the Vegetarian Society, said: "A balanced vegetarian diet will supply all the essential nutrients you need to help keep you fit and healthy and also follows current healthy eating advice, which includes more fruit and vegetables in the diet."

She went on to say that a typical healthy vegetarian diet includes "plenty of fruit and vegetables and starchy foods" as well as "moderate amounts of high protein foods".

Vegetarians are less likely to suffer from conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, she added.
