Walking 'helps shed the Christmas pounds'

29/12/2009

Walking 'helps shed the Christmas pounds'Walking can be the ideal calorie-burner for people looking to lose weight after the festive season, it has been suggested.

According to the British Nutrition Foundation, a typical Christmas dinner contains 1,470 calories, meaning many people may be able to benefit from a little light exercise in the coming days and weeks.

Ruth Somerville, of walking charity Ramblers, said people can tailor walks to their own pace, noting that such exercise need not be overly strenuous.

If you feel stuffed to the gills with mince pies, then you can walk gently at first. Gradually you'll burn them off," she stated.

"Walking is proven to get people talking and communicating more. So instead of the family slouching round the telly on a post-pie sugar rush slump, you'll be out getting the oxygen and serotonins whizzing round your bodies and minds.

Ms Somerville said walking can help people talk and laugh more, digest their food and ultimately get a better night's sleep.

Ramblers reports that 77 per cent of UK adults, or about 38 million people, walk for pleasure at least once a month.
