Weight loss food supplements 'don't work'
20/07/2010
Most of us will admit that we could do with losing a few pounds, but finding the time to exercise isn't easy. So, it's not surprising that some people turn to slimming pills to lose that extra stone. But, if you've been using weight loss food supplements, you should probably throw them away because they are no more effective than dummy pills, according to two studies presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Stockholm, Sweden, recently. The studies found no evidence that over-the-counter slimming supplements, including those based on cabbage, fibre and plant extracts, aided weight loss beyond the placebo effect. Sian Porter, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, advised against taking supplements and instead suggesting that exercise and healthy eating is the key to weight loss. "It's important that those who are overweight learn how to manage food and drink intake and re-educate themselves about healthy eating rather than relying on a short fix substitute. What happens when you stop taking them? Are you going to take them for the rest of your life?" "It is important to do exercise; it's not just about putting on lycra and going to the gym, it's things like when you go to the supermarket, park your car as far away from the door as possible, it's about being physically active in your daily life. It's little changes that can make a big difference." Don't miss out on the best health and beauty offers by visiting the page regularly! Posted by Jez Walters. ![]() |
