Winter warmers are 'good for getting your five a day'
04/11/2009
Those who find themselves craving stodgy food over salad this winter should not deny themselves, according to Zest magazine. In fact, Mandie Gower, editor of Zest magazine, said that as long as you opt for healthy options, many winter warmers are great ways of getting your five-a-day. "Home-made soups, hearty stews and pasta sauces can all be packed full of vegetables and protein-rich pulses," she added. Ms Gower recommended starting the day with porridge to "provide you with slow release energy" and snacking on seeds and nuts to "give your mood and energy levels a kick-start". She also advised eating ginger and garlic to fight off colds and flu, because "garlic helps kill off infections while ginger will stimulate your blood flow and circulation". Meanwhile, the British Dietetic Association recommends people feeling under the weather should try to eat small regular meals and snacks and drink plenty of fluids, especially if they have a fever.
