Women 'can get all of their essential nutrients from healthy food and drink'
02/06/2010
Women who have a healthy balanced diet with plenty of food and drink options should be able to get all of their essential nutrients from food sources, according to the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS). The organisation was commenting after research, which looked at more than 100 different scientific studies, found that British women are not getting the right amounts of nutrients, such as vitamin D, in their diet. The review, published in the journal Nutrition Bulletin, found that the diets of UK women are "too high in saturated fat and salt, and low in fibre, oily fish and fruits and vegetables". Dr Carrie Ruxton, independent nutrition advisor to the HSIS, stressed the importance of a good quality diet throughout a woman's life. "Women are not only influencing their own health but, during the childbearing years, potentially influencing the health of their children." For some women, particularly those with increased dietary needs because of pregnancy, "taking a multivitamin is a useful way of meeting nutrient requirements", she advised. Dr Ruxton noted: "The role of supplements is to ensure that nutrient targets can be met while people are trying to improve their diets."
