Women 'need 20 minutes more in bed than men'

28/01/2010

Women 'need 20 minutes more in bed than men'Females need about 20 minutes more sleep than men, an expert has said.

According to Jim Horne, director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University and author of Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep, women need more sleep because of their multi-tasking brain, the Daily Mail reported.

"Women tend to multi-task - they do lots at once and are flexible - and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater," the expert revealed.

"A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision-making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male" he noted, but added that this will probably not be as much as a woman.

Mr Horne noted that the average adult needs between six and eight hours of sleep each night but warned that individual needs vary.

Earlier this month the Globe and Mail reported that doing yoga while in bed could be better than counting sheep.
