A garden offers a retreat, says expert

23/12/2009

A garden offers a retreat, says expertGardening has been embraced by both young and old throughout the first decade of the millennium, an expert has claimed.

Writing in the Times, Caroline Donald has outlined the top gardening trends of the noughties, adding that much has changed.

"Gardening is no longer an activity considered by the young as something you do when you retire: just look at the vast collection of colourful wellingtons, stylish bird houses and funkily packaged wildflower seed mixtures at the garden centre," she said.

Since the economic downturn, keen gardeners have been digging their flower and vegetable beds to add colour to our lives, discarding the minimalist trends which were promoted in the early 2000s, she noted.

Grow your own has been one of the biggest trends of the decade, she added, noting that the demand for allotments has never been higher, while celebrities such as Michelle Obama and Sarah Brown have been displaying their carrots.

Green spaces have become less about showing off and more about creating a "sustainable place" to retreat to, the green-fingered expert added.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Michelle Obama's White House garden is ready for winter.
