Billboard of Mary and Joseph in bed causes fury

22/12/2009

Billboard of Mary and Joseph in bed causes furyAn advertising billboard which depicts Mary and Joseph in bed has caused outrage in New Zealand.

Located outside St Matthew-in-the-City Church in Auckland, the billboard shows an image of Mary and Joseph naked under the sheets, with the caption "Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow".

According to Archdeacon Glynn Cardy, the vicar of the Anglican church, the aim of the advert was to challenge literal interpretations of the Bible and engage non-believers before the festive season.

"Progressive Christianity is distinctive in that not only does it articulate a clear view, it is also interested in engaging with those who differ," he added.

However, Auckland's Roman Catholic diocese was not impressed, describing the implication that Mary and Joseph had just had sex as disrespectful and offensive to Christians.

The image of the couple in bed was smeared in paint within hours of going on display.

St Matthews became a parish in 1855, following the development of Auckland city.
