Children 'benefit from gardening'

29/06/2010

Children 'benefit from gardening'Parents and grandparents who are wondering how to keep children busy this summer should considering buying a few garden bargains and getting youngsters involved in green-fingered activities.

According to Colette Bond, Food for Life partnership manager at Garden Organic, gardening has numerous benefits for children.

"It teaches teamwork, social enterprise, financial skills and it's a great way of engaging with the community," she noted.

She added that there are also health benefits to getting young people interested in gardening and producing their own food.

"If children have actually grown something themselves then they are more inclined to want to taste it and try it. Therefore it opens them up to a wider range of fruit and vegetables", she stated.

Her comments came as a study by the Royal Horticultural Society said gardening in schools encourages children to develop their learning and teaches vital job skills.
