The Conservative Party has outlined plans for a scheme to offer energy efficiency home improvement grants.
Set to be piloted by 14 local councils, the grants could be worth up to £6,500 per home.
The cost of this work will be paid back through the household's reduced energy bills, the party said today (December 16th).
Commenting on the announcement, Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), said any scheme that encourages homeowners to think about improving the energy efficiency of their properties is "very worthwhile".
"It is a big responsibility for householders to take on board and over the next 20 to 30 years we have just got to bring houses up to a required standard of energy efficiency or else it is all doom and gloom," he said.
Mr Leech added that some homeowners have been "reluctant" to improve their home's efficiency and instead concentrate on adding a new bathroom or kitchen.
