Consumers 'shunning organic food and drink'

13/04/2010

Consumers 'shunning organic food and drink'Sales of organic food and drink products have declined by 12.9 per cent in Britain during 2009, according to the latest Organic Market Report by the Soil Association.

While sales of organic health and beauty products continued to grow rapidly with sales increasing by a third to £36 million, organic food and drink has been badly hit by the recession.

However, according to Tom MacMillan, executive director at the Food Ethics Council, organic food is not always as expensive as people assume.

"Veg box schemes, where local farms sell direct, can be better value for money than buying organic in a supermarket," he said.

Mr MacMillan added that there are other benefits to be found through these schemes.

"The farmer also gets more pence in the pound and because you get what you're given with most smaller box schemes, they can change how you think about food, cooking, the seasons and the environment."
