Expert gardener says trees are good garden bargains
23/12/2009
Trees are a garden bargain, offering good value for money and providing an excellent long-term investment, according to a top gardener. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Tony Kirkham, the head of arboretum at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, says trees are a garden bargain compared to ephemeral bedding plants. Trees also provide both the planter and their neighbours with "many years of satisfaction and pleasure", he said. According to the expert, selecting the right tree is important, adding that they should be purchased from a reputable nurseryman. Writing in the newspaper, he added: "The planting hold should be deep enough to hold the depth of the root system, but no longer." Trees should be planted in the soil in which it will grow, rather than using compost, Mr Kirkham added. Earlier this week, the Royal Botanic Garden said its experts had uncovered nearly 300 new species of plants and fungi this year. Make the most of your garden with our free plants offers.
