Food and drink news: 'Brits not aware of what they drink'

21/12/2009

Food and drink news: 'Brits not aware of what they drink'Millions of British adults are drinking more alcohol than they aware of, according to a new report.

The research by Alcohol Concern reveals that part of the problem is that people in the UK 'forget' exactly what they have drunk following substantial periods of drinking.

Commenting on the report, Michael Linnell, director of communications at the Lifeline Project, agreed with this theory, especially when it comes to young drinkers.

He said: "Most young people don't go out just for a nice social occasion – but to get drunk. This is particularly the case when you consider the popularity of mixing drinking with drugs, as is becoming the case."

Another reason for this development is considered to be drinkers' underestimation of what units are drunk each week. Mr Linnel argues that drinkers intentionally report their drinking habits falsely.

He explained: "People do deliberately underestimate it, and many people in the medical profession tell you they presume that people knock off a few units of what they say they drink each week, for the reason that it would be embarrassing."
